CHAPTER 13

Clara lifted her grimoire from the counter and shoved it in the shelf below, so it was out of sight. The book left a trail of glittery gold dust in its wake. Obviously, she’d closed the book before letting it cool down again. I had to assume that this was because she didn’t want me to know about the magic I’d just caught her working.

“Casting another Harmonious Home Spell?” I asked. I was sure the store was empty, seeing as she’d had her grimoire out. Our spell books were living, conscious tools of magic. The yellowed pages often glowed gold, the pages could flip on their own, and on very rare occasions, the book would actually speak Evol aloud. All in all, this was not an object to have out in front of non-magical people.

A quick survey of visible parts of the store along with some careful listening and intuitive sensing confirmed my suspicions. We were alone. I remembered that I’d tucked a cardigan somewhere behind the register, so I headed for the counter.

Clara stammered, “Hm? Oh, the Harmonious Home Spell… like I did this morning. No… I was just…”

“Dusting off the pages?” I teased. I joined her behind the register and started rummaging around until I found my sweater. I pulled it on, the soft layer immediately helping not only to warm my goosebumpy skin but also comfort me. I was home now.

“Never mind what I’m doing,” Clara stammered, pink-cheeked. “What happened to you and Tommy? You were gone an awfully long time and I started to worry, what with this thunderstorm. And it’s getting dark out! It’s nearly seven o’clock. Any word from Myles, yet?”

I unzipped the fanny pack and Diva climbed out. She pranced along the countertop dramatically, and in a voice that only I could hear she said, “Tell her of the adventure we had! Tell her how I may have saved a man’s life by spotting him from the sky!”

She then lifted the back of a wingtip to her brow. “It was dreadful! I’ll never get over the sight of that body. It will haunt me for the rest of my days!”

“It was unsettling, for sure,” I told her. I hugged myself.

To Clara I said, “Well, I figured out a few things, but didn’t find Myles. He might be down there, though, because I found evidence showing he rode in the Jeep that crashed. And Diva spotted a nearly-dead man. Search and Rescue is going to get him to a hospital, so she may have saved his life.” I may as well give credit where credit was due.

“Diva, what a good girl,” Clara cooed. She reached out and stroked the top of Diva’s head. Tomlin watched on, looking envious.

My bat familiar grinned and closed her eyes blissfully. “I really am a good girl,” she said with a sigh.

Clara tickled her finger under Diva’s chin and then said, “You two could probably use some hot tea. I think my mom made dinner, too. Eggplant parm and spaghetti.
